Arts and Culture

You will have heard that Bougainville has a huge variety of artistic and cultural traditions, but they are not always on display for visitors - many are a part of daily life but some are reserved for marking special occasions. When shared respectfully, tourism can help preserve traditional practices, and grow pride amongst locals. Here are some special practices, with stories shared by local people.

Dugout Canoes

A vital part of daily life, these canoes are made from a single log and balanced with an outrigger.

Clay Pots

Clay pots are made from local soils, and are used for cooking local specialties such as Tama Tama in Central Bougainville.

Paio Shell Money

Made from tree bark and animal teeth these high value gifts from North Bougainville are used in important ceremonies.
